Santa Fe May See Construction of Unique High-Tech Greenhouse

A concept called Renewable Energy Efficient Farming may soon be coming to the campus of Santa Fe Community College with the construction of a large greenhouse known as a closed-loop urban agricultural facility.

The project will be a joint venture between the college and the Los Lunas-based Ecoponex Systems of New Mexico and is expected to cost $6.5 million to build.

As designed, the facility, described as a “controlled environment structure,” would be fueled by biogas and solar energy, and would also use recycled water, all to grow vegetables and other staples.

A construction date for the greenhouse will most likely not be announced until Ecoponex completes the financing for the project and the New Mexico Board of Finance approves leasing the land for the project site.
