El Paso National Guard Armory to Get Extensive Makeover

Work is expected to begin later this summer on a significant upgrading of a National Guard armory in northeast El Paso.

Located at the intersection of Gateway Boulevard and Hondo Pass, the Texas Army National Guard Readiness Center is a nearly 50 years-old, one-story brick building that officials say has a number of structural issues.

Now, through funding provided by Texas’ Armory Revitalization Program, some $5.7 million will be spent upgrading the armory’s utilities systems, renovating bathrooms, and installing a new HVAC system.

The 44,000 square-foot building last saw a renovation more than two decades ago.

There are currently nearly 120 operating National Guard armories in Texas. According to a recent report, just over 20 of those facilities could be targeted for solar power upgrades if the funding can be secured.

Work on the El Paso armory is expected to be completed by the summer of 2018.
