University of New Mexico Hospital Gets Initial Approval for Construction of Nearly $700 Million Hospital
A proposal whose roots reach back some four years ago to build a new 408-bed hospital in Albuquerque is finally gaining some traction.
Officials with the University of New Mexico Hospital have said that a current facility at 2211 Lomas Boulevard NE isn’t up to handling the roughly 6,000 patients the facility treats every year, complaining, among other things, of operating rooms are too small.
An earlier proposal for a new UNMH hospital failed in the fall of 2012 when members of the New Mexico Finance Authority delayed voting on the project due to what they said was a lack of information. Several months later UNMH officials said the project was on hold.
Now members of the University of New Mexico’s Health Science Center Committee have voted unanimously in favor of a request by UNMH to pay for the construction documents and architectural renderings of what will be the first phase of the project.
That first phase will comprise a 372,000 square foot facility that will go up near the intersection of Lomas Boulevard and University Boulevard. It will house 120 beds and is expected to cost up to $250 million to build.
The design process has a projected price tag of $12 million and is expected to take around a year to complete.
