Construction of Big Airport Hotel in El Paso Could Start Later This Year or Early 2018

Work may be finally ready to begin on the building of a 220-room hotel and adjoining retail center near the El Paso International Airport.

The development company EP Vida LLC of El Paso first proposed the project, which will go up on a vacant 10-acre site at the intersection of Airway Boulevard and Montana Avenue, more than 4 years ago.

Even though it was anticipated that work on the $64 million project would be well underway by late 2014 or early 2015, with an anticipated wrap date of fall 2015, the project has yet to get off the ground.

Reason: area hotels went to court to challenge a 2013 City of El Paso incentives package for the project. That package, said its detractors, amounted to unfair competition.

Even though those complaints were subsequently rejected by the El Paso County Court, the case on appeal made it to the Eighth Court of Appeals, where it similarly was seen as lacking merit.

That last court decision will now allow the project to go forward.

As envisioned, the hotel will measure more than 100,000 square feet, and will include retail, restaurant, and entertainment space.

The project will, more specifically, will be built inside the 220 acres of the Southern Industrial Park, which is adjacent to the airport.
