One of the top-rated and busiest ski resorts in Colorado is about to take on a $30 million construction project.

The Copper Mountain Resort, located roughly 75 miles to the west of Denver, wants to build a series of housing and retail structures designed to cater to the needs of a growing clientele.

The resort, which was opened in 1972 and is currently owned by the Park City, Utah-based Powdr Corporation, has announced plans to put up a 50-room hotel, as well as a 10,000 square-foot conference center.

Other projects for the resort’s 8.5-acre site includes an event barn, 15 condominiums, eight town houses, and three single-family homes.

Plans also call for the construction of a three-level underground parking space.

Plans for the project have been presented to the three-member Summit County Board of Commissioners, but still need to win a zoning change approval from the county to become reality.

The resort, under the ownership of Powdr, one of the nation’s largest ski resort operators, has recently seen four of its restaurants upgraded, as well as the construction of a new mountain coaster.

If the zoning change is secured, work at Copper Mountain could begin early next year.

According to industry statistics, skiing in Colorado represents an annual economic impact of more than $4.8 billion, attracting nearly 13 million visitors.
