Sporting Facility Renovations Slated for the University of Arizona

Plans have now been approved for the renovation and upgrading of two popular athletic facilities on the main campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Members of the Arizona Board of Trustees have signed off on a project that will see the $15 million rebuilding of a 50-meter pool at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center at 1827 E. Enke Drive.

The project is expected to begin next spring.  The facility that was built in 1975 will also see the pumping and plumbing infrastructure repaired. The building’s old diving pool will be demolished, with the main pool extended.

Completion date for the aquatic center work is pegged for June 2019.

A separate project on another well-used UA facility will see the renovation of the Hillenbrand Softball Stadium at 1700 E. 2nd Street.

Opened in 1993 with a seating capacity of over 2,900, the stadium will get new shading, press box renovations, and dugout upgrades at a cost of around $8 million.

The stadium renovation, also approved by the regents’ board, will most likely begin early next summer with a wrap date before the spring 2019 softball season.

The aquatic center is named after William Hillenbrand, and the stadium after Rita Hillenbrand; both longtime donors to the university.
