Extensive upgrades and renovations to the Denver Animal Shelter may become reality soon, depending upon the results of a bond election this November.

Voters in the Mile High City will decide on what is being called the Vibrant Denver Bond, which, if passed, will see $950 million going to fund upwards of 60 individual infrastructure projects.

Exactly $10 million of the bond, one of the largest planned public facilities projects, is targeting work at the animal shelter, which is located along the South Platte River at 1241 W. Bayaud Avenue.

According to the official bond proposal, the $10 million will go for improving dog kennel space and dog runs. Additional work will see enhancements to the shelter’s lobby and intake area as well as clinic space.

The just over 36,000-square-foot shelter was built according to LEED Gold design standards and opened in the spring of 2011.

According to city statistics, the shelter takes in upwards of 10,000 animals a year, a clientele that, besides dogs and cats, sometimes also includes chickens, cows, horses, and pigs.
