Plans have been announced for the construction of half a dozen new hangars of varying sizes at the Scottsdale Airport.
The company Yam Management says it wants to build the facilities on a nearly 9-acre site the company purchased for $31 million three years ago on the southeast side of the airport property at 14930 N. 87th Way.
Altogether, the six hangars will equal 148,000 square feet, down from an earlier proposed 155,000 square feet, with the individual structures varying in size between 30,000 square feet and 42,500 square feet.
According to City of Scottsdale documents, two underground fuel tanks will be built as part of the project, one capable of holding 30,000 gallons, and the other, 90,000 gallons.
A Summary of Modifications for the project submitted by the company Land Development Services of Scottsdale notes that the hangars will be built to provide a “high-quality product that is consistent with the surrounding context.” That document adds: “The materials, form, and character are all shared with other properties surrounding the airport.”
Project design is focusing on a “horizontal datum that provides a shift in color, texture, and fenestration, breaking up the facade over the full height.”
Final plans for the hangars will be reviewed by Scottsdale Development Review Board on the way to city approval of the project.
Yam Management is part of the Yam Worldwide group of Scottsdale, which includes Yam Properties and the Yamwood Foundry, which produces high quality corporate furniture and hospitality equipment.
The Scottsdale Airport is located 9 miles to the north of downtown Scottsdale. Originally built during World War II, it is today one of the busiest single runway airports in the country.
