A public comment period is scheduled to end in another week and a half for a project that will see the replacement installation of new waterlines at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The project centers on putting in two 12-inch waterlines that are designed to replace older cast iron pipes. Those pipes, running in alignment from Technical Area 48 to Pecos Road, are there to provide water for any fire suppression needs within the larger Technical Area 55.
A wetlands assessment will evaluate any potential impact to area wetlands because of the project. According to a statement from the National Nuclear Security Administration, the assessment will additionally provide any “alternatives to the proposed project.”
Although an earlier wetlands assessment was published three years ago, a different construction method along the northern fenced boundary of Technical Area 55 was proposed “due to issues with the original construction method.”
Upon the completion of the comment period on July 14, a reevaluation of the alternatives to the original project will be undertaken “before implementing a proposed wetland action.”
The National Nuclear Security Administration, established in 2000, operates under the auspices of the federal Department of Energy.
