An always-growing school district on the south side of Tucson may see most of its 21 schools undergoing upgrades and repairs beginning next year, depending upon the fortunes of a ballot to be decided by voters in November.

The second largest district in Arizona with an enrollment of nearly 15,000 students, the Sunnyside Unified School District will be asking voters to approve a $120 million bond, one of the largest such bonds in the district’s history.

If approved, the bond would fund upgrades to the district’s flagship Sunnyside High School, which was built in 1955 and is located at 1725 E. Bilby Road.

Additional work would see general campus security upgrades and classroom modernization.

District voters were last presented with a bond proposal in November of 2011 when they gave their approval, by a 54% to 46% margin, to an $88 million bond that would be used to fund the building of a fine arts school, and general renovations and repairs for other facilities.

Established in 1921, the Sunnyside Unified School District has twelve elementary schools, four middle schools, and three high schools, as well as an early childhood and fine arts school.
