Funding has now been secured for the construction of a long-desired fire training center that will go up on the east side of Flagstaff.
The funding comes in the form of a $4 million grant awarded by the State of Arizona, with the city of Flagstaff kicking in another $650,000 to pay for the facility’s design.
As envisioned, the new facility will not only serve as regional hub for wildland fire training but will also be the home to the Flagstaff Fire Department’s Wildland Fire Management division.
In addition, the center will provide sawyer certification and the study of incident management and control systems.
In a statement, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs said the $4 million is tantamount to an investment that will “make sure northern Arizona has the highly trained personnel and resources they need to effectively respond to wildfires and protect both individuals and property.”
The Flagstaff Fire Department currently has seven strategically located stations in metro Flagstaff. Its administrative offices are located in the Flagstaff City Hall.
The new training center will be built off Route 66, just to the south of the Picture Canyon Natural and Cultural Preserve. A construction timetable for the facility has not yet been released.
