New recreation center construction and the upgrading of existing community centers may be in the offing in Dona Ana County depending upon the fate of a general obligation bond in next month’s election.
Residents are being asked to decide on two separate bond proposals with a combined dollar value of $140 million, with Question 1 asking for the approval of some $105 million for both park and trail projects.
The goal of both bonds, according to a news release issued by the County, is to create “safe, welcoming spaces that meet the needs of a growing population while preserving the county’s vibrant culture.”
The projects will additionally help provide opportunities for “recreation, connection, economic growth, and improved infrastructure.”
Question 1, if passed, will fund the building of recreation centers on both the north and south side of the County; while also upgrading any number of existing community centers to make them “more welcoming, modern spaces where residents can gather, participate, and access essential resources.”
Question 1 additionally proposes funding for a wide variety of wastewater system improvements.
Exactly $35 million in bonds as proposed with Question 2 will go for the upgrade work at the Dona Ana County Fairgrounds, home to the popular Southern New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo, at 12125 Robert Larson Boulevard.
That work will see the building of a new amphitheater at the Fairgrounds on a currently unused speedway.
Question 2 is also proposing access upgrades to the long-planned High Mesa Road, which will connect Santa Teresa to Interstate 10.
The general obligation bond questions were approved for the November ballot early last month by the Dona Ana County Board of Commissioners after several months of public input.
