Plans are advancing for the building of a multi-use project in downtown Phoenix that will require the demolition of several long-standing structures.

The development company True North Studios wants to build an expansion to The Herrera, a mixed-use complex located at 811 N. 1st Street.

But to clear the space for the project, the Phoenix-based developer True North Studio has submitted papers asking for permission to demolish the Coronado Hotel at 807 N. 1st Street.

That two-story hotel was built nearly a century ago and through the years has been the home to both overnight and long-term guests. An advertisement for the hotel in the Arizona Republic in 1932 read simply: “Excellent rooms, meals if desired.”

A second one-story structure next door to the Coronado, and formerly housing Matt’s Big Breakfast, is also slated for demolition.

The application for the two demolition projects is currently being reviewed by the City of Phoenix under a 60-day hold set to expire at the end of April.

True North Studios specializes in real estate development, with an emphasis on repurposing existing structures in Phoenix’s historic Roosevelt Row neighborhood.
