Massive Colorado Springs Data Center Project Aired-Much Opposition

Project Taurus meeting notice

Plans have now been revealed for what will be the largest data center facility in Colorado.

If approved, a 22-acre site at 1565 High Tech Way in northwest Colorado Springs will be the home to the new center, which will become reality with the repurposing of an existing 451,000-square-foot building that previously served as an Intel fabrication plant.

The proposal for the site is also calling for the demolition of several existing structures to make room for the data center’s chiller units and generators.

Currently called “Project Taurus,” the proposal has been put forth by the Oakland, California-based data center developer Raeden, which has spearheaded similar facilities in Phoenix and Miami, among other places.

The proposal has sparked significant opposition from area residents who say the data center will be too large for the surrounding area, while also raising issues regarding energy use, noise, and water impact.

The company has said that it will employ an air-cooled closed-loop system that reuses water. In a public presentation, James Green, Raeden chief operating officer, said the company will also install attenuated walls and screens designed to prevent noise from being heard by neighbors.

The former Intel structure was built in 1996 and used by the company for upwards of a decade before being purchased for $13 million by the Industrial Realty Group.

Although an exact timetable for when Project Taurus will become reality has not been announced, press accounts have said that the data center will be developed in phases.
