One of the largest community developers and home-building companies in the country has been purchased by the corporate investment company Berkshire Hathaway for $8.5 billion in cash.
The deal is expected to be finalized later this year.
Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, the Taylor Morrison Home Corporation has been prominent throughout the South and West, building upwards of 350 communities, specializing in both middle and upscale housing, and seeing revenue more than $8.1 billion last year.
Taylor Morrison’s roots reach back more than a century when an earlier version of the company began to build upwards of 1,200 homes a year, securing a place on the Fortune 500 list in 2021.
The company entered talks earlier this spring with Berkshire Hathaway under the new leadership of Greg Abel, who became the company’s chief executive officer in January of this year after the retirement of the previous head, the legendary Warren Buffet.
According to the Financial Times, the acquisition of Taylor Morrison means that eventually the company will merge with Clayton Homes, which is owned by Berkshire. That planned “marriage,” remarked Abel in a statement, means that “over time, we expect to unify our site-built homebuilding operations into a combined platform, enabling us to deliver the dream of homeownership to more Americans.”
In a separate statement, Sheryl Palmer, chief executive officer with Taylor Morrison, said the acquisition will “propel Taylor Morrison into its next, and most exciting chapter, supported by Berkshire’s unmatched capital strength and long-term investment philosophy.”
Reports indicate that Taylor Morrison’s leadership, including Palmer, will remain in place.
