Work could begin sometime early next year on the creation of a new public park some eight miles to the southwest of Albuquerque.
The project is set to go up somewhere near the West Gun Club Road in an area of Bernalillo County that is short on neighborhood parks.
In 2024 members of the New Mexico State Legislature voted to approve upwards of $1 million in capital outlay funding to move the project forward, with around $250,000 of that figure going for the planning and design work of what may be a two- to three-acre park.
The remaining $750,000 is expected to target the first phase construction of the park. Altogether, it is thought that the project will cost upwards of $2.2 million. Bernalillo County officials have said that they hope to secure the remaining funds for the project through a new capital outlay hopefully approved by state lawmakers neat year.
Where exactly the park will be built remains open to question, although a handful of sites are said to be under consideration. In a statement, Bernalillo County vice-chairman Frank Baca took note of the planned community input meetings on the project and commented: “We will be presenting possible locations and features for the park.”
Added Baca: “Community input will be highly valued in site selection and the creation of a working program to move forward with the development.”
Earlier Bernalillo County documents indicated that the park would include a picnic area, playground, and shade structure, among other amenities.
If all goes as anticipated, work on what is being called the West Gun Club park could begin by the spring of next year.
