In one more sign that a proposed $3.2 billion logistics park in Arizona is going to become reality, 56 acres valued at just over $9 million were recently acquired to provide space for the project.
More than years ago, the Fort Worth-based Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway company announced plans to build a logistics park and railway hub in the rural community of Wittman, a project that is expected to see the construction of a terminal, distribution facilities, and a warehouse.
Called the Logistics Park Phoenix, the project, as envisioned, will additionally include the building of a 22-acre wastewater treatment facility.
To be built along U.S. Route 60, the project has spirited the opposition of area residents who have said the hub upon completion will create both noise pollution as well as environmental damage. It has also been charged that the project will ultimately lead to a lowering of area property values.
Despite those objections, BNSF has been moving forward on the project. In acquiring the 56 acres, the railroad company also purchased half a dozen existing homes at the site.
Several groups have come out in opposition to the project, including the Sun CityWest Property Owners and Residents Association, as well as the Nadaburg Unified School District.
Earlier this month, BNSF said it planned to invest upwards of $3.6 billion this year expanding its freight rail network. The spending will focus not just on the preliminary work at the Wittman hub, but also on track surfacing and undercutting, as well as the replacement of around 2.5 million rail ties.
