Work is expected to begin later this year on the building of a 12,400-seat amphitheater on the northeast side of El Paso.
The project, which has been much discussed throughout the city for more than a year, belongs to the Venu Holding Corporation of Colorado Springs.
A big step forward for the project has now been taken with the announcement of an official partnership between Venu and the City of El Paso seeing the company purchasing the 20 acres needed to build the new facility.
Those 20 acres comprise the site of the former 9,700-seat Cohen Stadium at 9700 Gateway N Boulevard, which was demolished in the summer of 2019.
The new stadium project is backed by a $31.5 million incentive package from the city.
In a statement, Mayor Renard Johnson said what is being called the Sunset Amphitheater will be a “destination unlike any other in our region, one that showcases our city’s unique landscape, while driving economic growth, creating jobs, and bringing world-class entertainment to the borderland.”
Venu, which specializes in developing and operating upscale music venues, last week released first quarter figures showing that it had assets of more than $212 million, up from $178 million in the final quarter of last year.
The company is currently in the process of building similar amphitheater projects in McKinney, Texas, and two cities in Oklahoma: Broken Arrow and Oklahoma City.
