A proposal has been aired that, if turned to reality, will see the construction of a binational tram that would connect the El Paso International Airport with the Ciudad Juarez International Airport.
The roughly 2-mile tram is the brainchild of the company Desarrollo Economico del Norte, which has said the system would prove particularly valuable for travelers not only going and coming from both countries, but for connections to the more than two dozen destinations that both airports are connected to.
According to the website net noticias, the tram would serve to address the challenge of “unpredictable wait times” at the international border.
In explaining the project, Hector Nunez, president of Desarrollo Economico del Norte, additionally noted: “For international passengers, safety is the priority, as well as a guaranteed trip on a controlled route.”
If built, the proposed Juarez-El Paso Express Tram, continued Nunez, would comprise the world’s “first binational air super hub.”
In an interview with El Paso television station KFOX 14, El Paso Mayor Cruz Perez Cuellar said he thought the tram proposal is a good one, “but it surely is very costly.”
Perez Cuellar added that the City of El Paso does not currently have the resources to support the project, but that city officials are working with Nunez “to find a funding source.”
In a promotional video released by Desarrollo Economico del Norte the company says, “We invite investors, organizations, and authorities to join this proposal to make a strategic binational project a reality.”
