Albuquerque City Council Approves Funding for Wide Array of Projects

Members of the Albuquerque City Council have given their approval to $20 million in funding for the construction of new affordable housing.

That $20 million is part of a significantly larger $100 million package of quality of life and infrastructure projects given a green light by the council.

Funding for the projects will come through the selling of gross receipts tax improvement revenue bonds.

An earlier version of the proposal, which includes $15 million for building a new public safety facility on the west side of the city; and another $15 million to build a swimming pool at the North Domingo Baca Park at 7521 Carmel Avenue NE; failed for a lack of votes in the council late last year.

The funding will also target $15 million for the long-planned widening of Unser Boulevard and Paseo del Norte Boulevard, as well as the construction of a new bicycle motocross pump track at the Los Altos Park at 10100 Lomas Boulevard NE.

An additional project will see the upgrading of a pickleball complex at the Manzano Mesa Park at 501 Elizabeth Street SE.

In a statement, City Councilor Brook Bassan noted that the building of the motocross and pickleball facilities, among other projects, will “attract tournaments throughout the Southwest and Rocky Mountains regions.”

“Hosting regional competitions,” Bassan added, “will be a boost to the City’s economy.”
