A move to renovate facilities at the Grand Canyon National Park Airport, located in the Arizona city of Tusayan, may soon receive up to $850,000 in state funding.
Officials with the airport, which is operated by the Arizona Department of Transportation and built in 1967 at a cost of $1.6 million, have long talked about the need to both renovate and upgrade its terminal.
In the process, it has also been suggested that a new airline gate should be built to accommodate larger 737-style planes.
Arizona Democrat Governor Katie Hobbs has included the proposed funding as part of an overall new transportation budget that includes $11.4 million for highway maintenance work and $4.4 for road surface upgrades.
The $850,000 earmarked for the Grand Canyon National Park Airport work, to be approved by members of the Arizona State Legislature, is contingent upon the Arizona Department of Transportation securing an equal amount of funding out of Washington from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Terminal Grant program.
Situated on 859 acres, the Grand Canyon airport is the fourth busiest air carrier airport in the state.
Work is scheduled to begin this summer on a $15 million runway rehabilitation project at the airport that is expected to be completed by this fall.
