Plans are underway for the eventual constriction of a new Bernalillo County Sheriff’s substation in Albuquerque.
The project would go up in the city’s Northeast Heights quadrant and is regarded as a long-standing need for an underserved part of greater Albuquerque.
As a result, county officials have put in a request to the New Mexico State Legislature for $350,000 in capital outlay funds to pay for the acquisition of land for the new facility as well as its design.
Although an exact site for the substation has not yet been decided, reports indicate that the facility could be built near the Bernalillo County Emergency Communications Center at 10401 Holly Avenue NE.
Another possible site would see the facility going up not far from a Bernalillo County Fire Department station just to the west of Tramway Boulevard.
The sheriff’s office currently has three other substations up and running in Los Ranchos, the South Valley, and Tijeras.
The substation project is one of nearly $40 million in capital outlay projects submitted this winter by Bernalillo County to state lawmakers.
The Northeast Heights section of Albuquerque, to the north of Interstate 40, includes a number of fast-growing upscale residential communities, as well as several churches and two Albuquerque Public School elementary schools.
