A move to increase housing construction on land where it is not typically seen has been approved by the Colorado State Senate.
The Housing Opportunities Made Easier Act calls for streamlining the process allowing non-profits, school districts, state colleges, and transit districts, among other entities, to build on land they currently own.
If ultimately passed by the Colorado House, the bill, according to a press release issued by a group of lawmakers, “would unlock centrally located and underutilized land to build housing near job centers, transit hubs, schools, and local businesses.”
The bill would additionally apply to local housing authorities and universities.
In a statement, Democrat Senator Tony Exum remarked, “If we’re serious about solving the housing crisis in Colorado, we need to open up every available option to get our neighbors secure and affordable housing.”
The targeted properties to be covered by the legislation would be limited to five acres within a municipality or census-designated place.
The measure, if signed into law by Governor Jared Polis, would become effective on December 31, 2027.
