In an ongoing move to consolidate and reduce government property space, Boulder County is hoping to shed a complex that includes five office buildings and four playing fields.
Located at 1333 Iris Avenue, the North Broadway Complex comprises some 17.5 acres and includes a playground as well as walking paths.
The move comes after an announcement made earlier this year in which the County revealed that it had purchased for $14.2 million an existing structure at 2525 28th Street.
In so doing, according to a press release, the County is reducing its office footprint by 17% and saving upwards of $1.7 million in energy costs.
In a statement, Yvette Bowden, assistant county administrator, said, “Good governance and the stewardship of public resources is always a county priority thoughtfully considered for both short-term impacts and long-term opportunities.”
The effort to sell the North Broadway Complex has not been without controversy: Residents in the area say putting the property up for sale means saying goodbye the Little League teams that have used the facility’s baseballs fields since the late 1950s.
In response, those residents have formed a group called Save Iris Fields, launching in the process a petition that has secured more than 4,700 signatures.
What happens next will depend on bids submitted to the County to purchase the entirety of the North Broadway Complex site, and whether any of those bids will call for preserving the fields.
