An effort is underway to build a new shelter facility in Fort Collins that will be operated by an organization that has been providing such space for residents for more than a dozen years.
The non-profit Fort Collins Rescue Mission, which is headquartered at 316 Jefferson Street, wants to build a modern facility to be called the Homeless Resolution Center on the north side of the city at 1311 N. College Avenue.
Officials with the organization have said that the new shelter is needed to expand bed space and provide both food and rehabilitation programs.
The facility is expected to measure some 38,000 square feet and will provide enough space for 250 beds, as well as offices and a day center.
In a public announcement, the mission has said that it particularly wants to combine it’s “community partners all under one roof who can address pressing issues our guests are facing, like behavioral health, mental health, and job placement.”
The new building will greatly expand on the group’s current 5,000-square-foot building which only has enough space for 89 beds.
The project received the approval last fall of the Fort Collins Planning and Zoning Commission and is expected to cost around $27 million to build.
Around $24 million has already been secured through a combination of state and local grants, as well as private giving.
If all goes as anticipated, it is expected that work on the new shelter will launch later this year.
