While twelve months ago voters in the Chandler Unified School District rejected a larger bond last November, a $271.5 million bond was approved on Tuesday by a close margin.
As proposed, the bond will fund a wide variety of upgrade projects in a district that includes 32 elementary schools, ten junior high schools, and eight high schools, comprising some 5 million square feet of property.
With around 43,000 students, the district has the second largest enrollment in the state.
According to the publication Queen Creek Tribune the bond will fund projects in three separate categories, with “$186.8 million for maintenance, improvements, and renovations to school facilities, including security enhancements, acquisition of land, and new construction.”
Included among the planned projects: the $40 million rebuilding of the Hartford Elementary School at 700 N. Hartford Street, which was originally built in 1957.
Serving the city of Chandler, as well as portions of Gilbert and Queen Creek, the Chander Unified School District is one of the largest in the state, encompassing around 80 square miles.
Voters in the district in 2024 rejected a larger $487 million bond by a 54% to 46% margin.
