Circle K Project in Pueblo May Go Up On Site That Will Also See New Affordable Housing

Plans are being discussed that may lead to the building of a new Circle K store and gas station on the south side of Pueblo.

The project would go up at 1228 E. Orman Avenue in the city’s Bessemer neighborhood. Because that neighborhood is regarded as a food desert, meaning one lacking in produce options, the new Circle K would also include a small grocery store.

Headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, the Circle K company is one of the largest convenience store chains in the country. Founded in 1951 in El Paso with just one store, the company today operates in more than 15,000 locations.

The company recently announced plans to open 500 new stores by the end of 2028.

There are around 160 Circle K locations currently in the Centennial State, with those stores generally varying in size between 2,000 square feet and 4,000 square feet.

To make way for the new Circle K location in Pueblo, an existing one-story, 46,000-square-foot structure would have to be demolished. That building formerly housed offices for the Convergys Corporation, an information products company that ceased operations in 2018.

Members of the Pueblo City Council are expected to take up the issue of demolishing the 1228 E. Orman Avenue building sometime in November. According to news reports, a portion of the site may end up being controlled by the city with the hope of developing future affordable housing.
