Clovis Seeking Funding from Santa Fe for New Fire Station Project

City officials in Clovis have long wanted to see construction of a new fire station, and now with a vote by the City Commission they may be one step closer to that goal.

In reviewing a list of projects that may be eligible for state funding, the commission said it hoped to secure up to $800,000 for the purchase of land to serve as the site of the new station.

City documents indicate that the new station would be similar in design to the existing one-story, three-bay Clovis Fire Station 5, located at 220 E. Brady Street.

Clovis currently has six fire stations located in various parts of the city.

That $800,000 will come in the form of a capital outlay request that Clovis plans to present to members of the New Mexico State Legislature when it meets in session early next year.

Altogether, Clovis will ask lawmakers for up to $5 million in state funding. The funding requests include $3 million for the completion of city’s new animal shelter near Bell Park, and another $500,000 for general park improvements in the city.

A specific site for the new fire station has not yet been decided, but it is generally agreed that the facility will go up on the growing east side of Clovis.

The New Mexico State Legislature is set to convene on January 20 and wrap up business one month later on February 19.
