Planning may well be underway sometime next year for a series of construction and upgrade projects belonging to Coconino Community College in Flagstaff.
But that planning is contingent upon the passage two weeks from now of a $100 million capital construction bond.
As proposed, the bond will fund the reconstruction of the school’s 55-year-old Fourth Street campus building, which would see a doubling of library space from the current 10,000 square feet to 20,000 square feet.
The bond will also pay for the building of a health care and fire science education structure on the Lone Tree campus.
According to a voter information document, some $9.5 million will target general renovation and repair work across the community college’s district, with $5.5 million set for student housing at the Page campus.
Appearing on the ballot as Question 490, the bond proposal marks the school’s first bond request since 1997, when voters approved a $25 million bond.
Founded in 1991, Coconino Community College is regarded as one of the top colleges in the country for Native American students seeking associate degrees.
Although based in Flagstaff, the community college district covers a wide desert rural expanse serving an enrollment of around 3,500 students.
