Plans have been announced for the construction of a new operations center at the Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado Springs.
The project is expected to cost around $250 million to complete and will be one of four similar facilities built on air force bases around the country.
In a statement, Colorado Republican Representative Jeff Crank remarked, “As the Space Force continues to grow, so will our community.”
The officially named Space Force Operations Facility will be built to support space-based reconnaissance operations and “all-domain command and control.”
In comments talking about the importance of the new facilities, Brigadier General Christopher Fernengel last month said the idea is to build a larger, more resilient, and technologically advanced force designed to support U.S. military efforts in space.
Fernengel, director of plans and programs with the Space Force, said the operations facilities will also make it more possible for the Space Force to establish ongoing and skilled workforce pools at the various Space Force bases.
Altogether, it is expected that the four planned new operations centers will cost around $1 billion to build. An exact schedule for when work will begin on the facilities remains to be announced.
