Work may well begin later this year on a project that has captured the imagination of the people of Phoenix: the construction of the tallest building in Arizona history.
Set to go up on Second Avenue between Van Buren and Fillmore streets in downtown Phoenix, the project belongs to Aspirant Development, which specializes in infill work and is a part of the larger Empire Group of Companies.
Upon completion the new structure, to be called the Arro, will top out at 541 feet in height. That figure surpasses the 483 feet of the Chase Tower at 201 North Central Avenue, which was completed in 1972.
As envisioned, the project will also include construction of a second structure, with a maximum height of 425 feet and designated as the south tower.
Altogether, the new project will measure some 16,000 square feet and has been several years in the talking stage, with the original concept first reported in the local press in 2019.
The project, which has since been approved by the Phoenix City Council, will include a combination of luxury residential units and a combined 180,000 square feet of office and commercial space. Additional feature: a 250-room hotel.
The project has spirited conversations in Phoenix centered on a possible return to the halcyon high-rise days of the 1970s when the city saw the construction of the 407-foot tall U.S. Bank Center at 101 North First Avenue, the 372-foot tall 100 West Washington building, and the 317-foot tall Hyatt Regency Phoenix at 122 North 2nd Street.
