County Animal Care and Resource Center addresses black mold

The Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center, located in southwest Albuquerque, is now moving animals out of the 17,143 square foot facility that broke ground in 2017.

Numerous samples identified the presence of black mold as tests were first implemented on October 11th, 2024, thanks to a concerned county employee, according to a county news release Thursday.

Contractors are expected to begin remediation work on kennel spaces sheltering 64 animals as well as the impacted areas including the main hallway and surrounding rooms Friday.

Voters approved the $7.8 million project via general obligation bonds in 2017.

According to the county, it appears the mold was in the ceiling tiles.

The facility is expected to resume operations Tuesday according to the release.

A press conference addressing the discovery was held at 1:00 p.m. on October 24th, 2024, at the facility.
