In yet the latest move to find a new use for the 161-acre site that was once the home to the Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins, a multi-use plan for the property has been approved.
Members of the Fort Collins City Council have given a green light to an effort to build a park on part of the site, which could include the eventual construction of a disc golf course, bike park of no more than 35 acres, and restrooms and shade structures.
The multi-use plan also puts an emphasis on engaging with Native American tribes when it comes to any development of the site and creating a wildlife conservation space not to exceed 30 acres.
The council action comes as Fort Collins voters in November will be asked to decide on a proposal declaring the entire Hughes site as a natural area.
The Hughes Stadium, which was demolished in 2018, was the long-time home to the Colorado State Rams. The football team moved out of that facility in 2017 after the construction of the Canvas Stadium on the CSU campus was completed.
Ever since the demolition of the Hughes Stadium, residents and city officials have been engaged in a series of energetic and sometimes rancorous debates regarding stadium site’s future.
A move to redevelop the property for the construction of up to 600 new homes was rejected by the city council in the spring of 2020.
