Just a year after being accepted as an expansion team by the National Women’s Soccer League, a Denver-based team has taken a significant step forward in a move to build a permanent stadium.
Currently playing in the Centennial Stadium in the city of Centennial, the Denver Summit FC team has purchased the land it needs to build a new home in Denver’s historic Santa Fe Yards, roughly 6 miles to the south of downtown Denver.
The project has already received support from the City of Denver, with members of the Denver City Council four months ago approving the spending of $50 million to purchase the property.
Denver has additionally agreed to invest upwards of $20 million to be spent on general and infrastructure improvements in the vicinity of the stadium. Meanwhile, Denver Summit FC has said it will spend around $200 million to bring the project to completion.
To be done in conjunction with the global design firm Populous, the project will also see the building of an entertainment district that will surround the planned 14,500-seat stadium.
That larger district will include both hospitality and restaurant space, along with bike and pedestrian paths.
In announcing the plans to purchase the site for the stadium, Rob Cohen, Denver Summit FC owner, remarked that the project will provide a “positive impact on our community for generations to come.”
Cohen had earlier remarked that the building of the new stadium would represent “the largest overall investment in a women’s professional sports team in history.”
Although an exact timetable for when work on the stadium will begin has not yet been announced, it is thought that the new facility will be completed sometime in 2028.
Site for the construction is the former home of the Gates Rubber Company factory, for decades one of the largest manufacturers of tires, hoses, and rubber goods. The company ceased operations at the Santa Fe Yards in 1991, with the demolition of the manufacturing facilities taking place some two years ago.
