Plans are now underway for the construction of an affordable housing apartment complex in Denver that will be built by a longstanding anti-hunger nonprofit.

The group Metro Caring says it wants to build 139 units in Denver’s City Park West, while also creating new office space, including a modern kitchen, for its anti-hunger work.

The project will also see the building of three rooftop spaces featuring a garden, dog playground, and tranquility space with a water feature.

The Denver architectural firm of Studio Completiva has been named as the project’s designer.

The campus project, which is expected to ultimately cost more than $100 million to complete, will go up off Downing Street, between Park Avenue and 18th Avenue.

Officials with the group say the project has been a long time coming, especially as an ongoing increase in the cost of housing has impacted the ability on the part of many residents to purchase food.

Currently located at 1100 E. 18th Avenue, Metro Caring was established in 1974 and within a matter of months was providing food stock for several thousand people. It established its current headquarters on 18th Street in 1999.

The group has secured state funding through the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority’s Land Banking Program to purchase the land needed for the new housing project just to the south of the 18th Avenue location.

If all goes well, it is expected that work on the new combined apartment complex and office may begin sometime in 2028.
