Plans for the much-anticipated upgrading of one of El Paso’s most popular parks include lake restoration, the building of new restrooms and concession areas, and the creation of more green space.
Located at 6900 Delta Drive, the 400-acre Ascarate Park has long been targeted for infrastructure improvements, improvements made more likely with the passage of a $350 million bond approved by El Paso County voters in 2024.
Last month, members of the El Paso County Commissioners Court gave their unanimous approval to a $4.2 million contract with the El Paso-based Exigo Architecture to create a conceptual design detailing improvements to the park.
According to published reports, initial design plans envision the building of new shelters, a festival area, and installation of underground electrical lines. A restoration of the park’s 48-acre lake is also planned.
Opened in the 1940s, Ascarate Park, located some six miles to the east of downtown El Paso, is the largest such park in metro El Paso.
It is expected that the upgrade design of the park will be completed sometime next summer, with actual construction beginning sometime after that. All the work at the park, according to a timeline put together by the county’s Capital Improvement Bond Trackers, is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2029.
