Ebon Solar Planning to Build Large Albuquerque Plant

Plans have been announced for the construction of a big solar park within the borders of the mixed-use master planned community Mesa del Sol, around 10 miles to the southeast of downtown Albuquerque.

The project belongs to the Delaware-based Ebon Solar LLC, a solar cell manufacturing company, and will see the construction of a 834,000-square-foot-manufacturing facility representing an estimated investment of around $942 million.

In a statement, Judy Cai, the chief executive officer of Ebon Solar, said the company chose to build in New Mexico because the state “offers abundant solar resources, favorable renewable energy policies, and a dedicated, skilled workforce.”

By design, the new facility will be tasked with developing the beginning-to-end advanced manufacturing of solar cells.

The project is the result of months of talks between local, regional, and state officials, and Ebon, which is leveraging both advanced chip technology as well as financial resources from the high-tech and financial services company Ebang International Holdings.

Earlier this year, Ebang, with offices in Hong Kong and Singapore, announced that its total net revenues for 2023 had decreased from $32.2 million the year before to just under $5 million. The company, invested in the cryptocurrency market, said the 2023 drop was due to investor skepticism regarding cryptocurrency and “general and administrative expenses.”

Ebon Solar, founded more than a decade ago, markets itself as a company “committed to innovation in solar manufacturing, bridging the technology gap to meet the growing demand for domestic renewable energy production, for our planet, for our future.”
