el paso electric set to embrace advanced metering infrastructure

In another move to modernize its procedures, the El Paso Electric Company has issued a Request for Proposal to implement advanced metering infrastructure.

In a statement, Adrian Rodriguez, interim chief executive office of the utility company, said, “A  major component of any smart community initiative is smart metering technology, which is the necessary foundation for a more sustainable environment, ensuring that our region is not left behind in an increasingly global economy.’

Such infrastructure is comprised of data management systems, communications networks, and smart meters allowing for instant communications between customers and utilities.

The system provides for automatic connection and disconnection features, as well as tampering detection and voltage monitoring.

The project will also include the installation of smart meters and a meter data management system.

The Request for Proposal has a November 1st deadline.

The El Paso Electric initiative comes as a new report issued by the New York-based MarketResearch.biz forecasts continuing growth in the advanced metering infrastructure market in the next decade.

The report, Global Advanced Metering Infrastructure Market Analysis, notes that the advanced metering infrastructure market in both the U.S. and Canada is expected to dominate the global market in the years to come.

But the report also suggests that a “lack of capital investments for infrastructure installation and inter-operability standards” in some countries may negatively impact development in those places.
