Work may begin in the months to come on parts of a massive $276 million capital improvement plan for the busy El Paso International Airport.
Last month, members of the El Paso City Council unanimously gave the plan, which has been long in the development stage, a green light. Of the $276 million, at least $130 million will target airfield improvements, while around $44 million is slated for terminal improvements.
Those terminal improvements will include the installation of LED lighting and a new ceiling. Additional work will see nearly $2 million going for the construction of solar panels which will make up the airport’s short-term covered parking area.
New taxiway construction is also scheduled to soon begin, while plans are in the design phase for the building of a new control tower.
Located at 6701 Convair Road, the El Paso International Airport handled nearly 3.7 million passengers last year, recovering from a double-digit loss of business during the pandemic, along with just over 83,400 cargo operations.
Funding for the airport improvements is coming partly from general airport revenue, passenger facility charges, and more than $5.1 million in Department of Transportation Airport Improvement Program grants.
