Plans remain in the works for the construction of a new police station on the growing and busy east side of El Paso.
Construction of the $38.6 million Eastside Regional Command Center will be paid for out of a larger $413 million in public safety bonds approved in a landslide by El Paso voters last year.
In the campaign leading up to that vote, city officials emphasized that a new center was needed to shorten response times in a broad swath of the city whose population has seen a nearly 14 percent increase in just the last decade alone.
The center, to be built near the intersection of Pebble Hills Boulevard and Tim Foster Street, will also will also include courtroom space for the El Paso Municipal Court.
Members of the El Paso City Council have now approved the El Paso-based MNK Architects as the project designer, with the design phase expected to wrap next summer.
A date for the project’s actual construction has not yet been announced.
