Plans to build a new regional headquarters for the Texas Department of Public Safety in El Paso are swiftly moving forward with the announcement of a $10 million appropriation approved by the Texas State Legislature.
The project, to go up on the northeast side of the city, will see the building of an 82,000-square- foot structure that will serve as the DPS’s new headquarters, along with what is called a Drivers License Mega Center that will measure around 8,000 square feet.
Additional work will also see the building of training facilities and new crime laboratory space. Officials have said that the lab space will make it possible to improve forensic processing times.
The project will become a reality within the Campo del Sol community on a 45-acre site.
In a statement, El Paso District 4 City Representative Cynthia Boyar Trejo characterized the project as a “tremendous win for Northeast El Paso.”
Continued Trejo: “The DPS regional headquarters will be a cornerstone of growth for the district I proudly represent, and I welcome this significant state investment in our community.”
Based in Austin, the Texas DPS is tasked with statewide law enforcement as well as overseeing testing and the issuance of drivers’ licenses. The agency has six administrative regions, with the El Paso location covering 36 counties in West Texas.
