Funding from Washington has now been secured for a project that will see the building in El Paso of a rail grade separation project at Rick Francis Street just to the north of Texas State Highway 20.
Rail grade separation projects usually see the construction of a bridge or underpass designed to allow rail traffic to proceed without coming into conflict with road vehicular traffic.
The project, just down the street from the growing campus of Texas Tech University, will be managed by the Texas Department of Transportation, and is one of a dozen such projects now receiving funding through the Federal Railroad Administration.
Altogether, that agency has awarded the Texas DOT $756 million in funding for a series of rail grade separation projects in the state.
In a statement, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick remarked that by “leveraging state funding to secure significant federal funding for rail grade separation projects, we will be able to improve rail and road safety for all Texans.”
To Qualify for the FRA funding, the Lone Star State kicked in $77.6 million.
The projects, notes Marc Williams, executive director of the Texas DOT, will also prove an important element in keeping “people and goods moving more efficiently.”
The FRA funding for the Texas projects are to date the highest amount of any state receiving such support.
