One of the most architecturally unique structures in downtown Denver may soon be the subject of an extensive upgrade.
Located at 1000 Broadway, the 45,000-square-foot Beaux Arts-designed Sports Castle was built in 1926 and has for decades delighted residents and visitors alike with its series of ornamental columns, stained-glass windows, and masonry façade.
Designed by Jacques Benedict and thought to be one of the last such structures undertaken by the famous architect in Denver, the three-story building was originally called the Cullen-Thompson Motor Company Building and served as a showroom for new luxury Chryslers.
In later decades the structure became the Gart Sports Castle, housing a large department store known for its wide variety of sporting goods offerings.
Also used in recent years for special events by the San Francisco-based production company Non Plus Ultra, the building has now been purchased by the Seattle-based outdoor retailer Evo. That company has a real estate development operation called Evolutions Projects, which wants to turn the structure into a regional hub for the company.
Plans for the structure, which have now been submitted to the City of Denver, include upgrading its plaster and terra cotta exterior, while adding new interior features such as a bar and food and beverage space.
An equipment service shop and new rooftop deck space will also be a part of the remodeling effort.
