Plans are advancing for the construction of a modern animal shelter in El Paso County that will go up adjacent to the El Paso County Jail Annex on Montana Avenue.
The project is being funded via a county bond measure that was approved last year by voters and is delegating around $32.7 million to build the facility.
What will be the first such shelter in the county’s history, will be built to have space for separate small, medium, and large dogs, spaying and neutering surgeries, and adoption center.
The project will also include a maintenance facility, staff space, and parking.
According to a county notice, the new shelter, with its many services, will “reduce the spread of diseases and the population of stray animals.”
The $32.7 million targeting the project is part of a larger group of projects to be paid for out of a $323.8 million bond. That bond proposal was broken down into several questions, with the one for an animal shelter winning 63% of the vote.
The proposed animal shelter project has already been the subject of public input regarding its design and range of services.
Work on the new shelter is expected to begin sometime early next year.
