Initial work may begin later this fall on the building of a paved raceway to the southeast of El Paso.
What is being called the Pan American Speedway will see the building near S. Fabens Carlsbad Road in Fabens of two tracks. One tracks will be for cars, motorcycles, and go-carts, while the other will be a rental track.
The project, on 66 acres, will also see the building of cabin houses, storage and workshop space, and garages.
In support of the project, members of the El Paso County Commissioners Court have voted to approve around $300,000 in property tax grants.
The tracks and adjacent facilities are expected to cost around $17 million to build.
Plans call for the project, which belongs to the El Paso-based company Speedway Resort Properties, to be built on a site in Fabens, some 32 miles to the southeast of El Paso and just north of the U.S./Mexican border.
If all goes as planned, the Pan American Speedway could be open for its first races by the fall of next year.
The project comes as the national speedway industry is experiencing historic growth. According to a study released late last year new multi-million-dollar racetracks are currently in the planning and building stages in Colorado, Michigan, Florida, and North Carolina, among other locations.
A report in 2024 by the company PRI Market Research of Indianapolis, pegged the support industry for raceways – which includes engine builders, fabricators, and racing retailers – at more than $8 billion.
