Former Big Albertson’s Grocery Store Building Now Listed for Sale

A nearly 70,000-square-foot former supermarket in Pueblo has hit the market with a $4.9 million asking price.

Located at 1545 S. Prairie Avenue, the building is the former home to an Albertson’s grocery store, which closed in the spring of 2018. That closure was attributed to a saturation of the local market owing to the presence of a nearby King Soopers, a Walmart Neighborhood Market, and a Walmart Supercenter.

At the time of the closing, a statement from the Albertson’s Safeway company remarked: “We evaluated this store extensively and looked at options to improve its performance. Ultimately, our business analysis indicated that we needed to close the store.”

Before the building was an Albertson’s store, it housed an outlet for the Country Market chain, which was eventually purchased by the Albertson’s company.

The Pueblo store closing is of a piece of a larger picture that has seen Albertson’s shuttering multiple stores in Colorado in recent years.

Designated as a Class B structure, the one-story building was built in 1972 and sits on a 6.1-acre site. It houses a back office, four restrooms, large refrigeration area, and underwent some renovations in 2010.

Pueblo city officials have long wondered what to do with the empty store but moves to repurpose it have proven unsuccessful.

The property is being listed by the realtor Commercial Real Estate of Woodland Hills, California, which specializes in large retail properties.
