Plans are swiftly moving forward for the creation of a children’s museum in the northern Colorado city of Loveland.

The project will be built within the Loveland Yards – a shopping center formerly known as the Outlets at Loveland – and is expected to cost at least $7.5 million to complete.

Plans for the Children’s Museum of Northern Colorado have been in the discussion stage for more than a decade and envision around 14,000 square feet of mostly interactive exhibit space.

That space will include a water gallery designed to illustrate Northern Colorado’s water system, and a music and dance space with a small stage. Additional space will be given over to a science gallery, construction gallery, and flexible display space for temporary exhibits.

In a promotional publication put out by the museum, it is noted that northern Colorado is one of the fastest growing regions in the Rocky Mountain West. “As the area grows, so does the need to add cultural amenities.”

The children’s museum, geared for children 10 years of age and younger, the publication continues, will offer exhibits that will be “kid height, kid safe, and kid loved.”

The existing structure at 5837 McWhinney Boulevard, on the east side of Loveland, was built in 1994 and renovated several years later. It was formerly the home of a Nike and Under Armour outlet, among other retail operations.

The building was purchased in 2024 by the nonprofit Erion Family Foundation for $5 million to be used for the purposes of a museum.

It is expected that work turning the former retail space into the children’s museum may begin sometime early next year, with a completion date of October 2026.
