Work may begin later this year on a project that will see the expansion of a distribution site in Mesa belonging to the internationally known Fujifilm company.

The project, which has received the approval of the Mesa City Council, will see the company, which specializes in semiconductor supplies, building just over 86,000 square feet of new facility space.

That space will include five new buildings, a cargo collection warehouse, and new storage tanks, all to go up on the company’s campus at 6550 Mountain View Road.

Fujifilm Electronic Materials, which makes specialty chemicals used in the manufacture of chips, is a spin-off of the famous Fujifilm Holdings Corporation. That company, established in 1934 as a manufacturer of photographic film, eventually expanded to take on everything from medical imaging to optical devices, printers, photocopiers, and graphic arts equipment.

The company has been a presence in southern Arizona since the late 1990s and completed an earlier $88 million expansion of its Mesa factory four years ago.

The new expansion project will be built in two phases and will additionally include the building of processing towers, a tank farm with chillers, and equipment canopy.
