Up to $500 million in State of Arizona funding has now been secured for the renovation of the nearly 30-year-old Chase Field in downtown Phoenix.
The funding became reality with Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs signing House Bill 2704, which was approved earlier this summer by members of the state legislature.
The retractable-roof stadium is the longtime home of the Arizona Diamondback baseball team. Guarantee of the funding means that the team will continue to play at Chase Field.
In signing the legislation, Hobbs remarked: “Throughout all of the unforgettable moments and the history made here, Chase Field has largely gone unchanged, never once undergoing a major renovation.”
Continued the Governor: “Fans have routinely showed up for this city, this state, and it’s time we show up for them.”
By design, the legislation will apply revenue from sales taxes generated by the stadium itself to pay for any number of upgrade and renovation projects. Published reports have indicated that the facility may most need an upgrade to its massive air conditioning system.
Additional work will include water pipe upgrades and structural repairs.
The legislation has a 30-year lifespan, meaning that the Diamondbacks will continue to play in the stadium for at least that long.
Built at a cost of $354 million and opened in the spring of 1998, Chase Field has a seating capacity of just over 48,000 and sometimes hosts both international soccer games as well as concerts.
Renovations to the facility are expected to be done bit by bit over a span of years.
Speaking with reporters, Diamondbacks chief executive officer Derrick Hall remarked: “It is not going to happen overnight, it will take many years.”
