Just under $400,000 has been approved for the construction of a long-discussed cultural plaza and events venue in Roswell, New Mexico.
The project, which earlier received around $201,000 in funding from the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration, is slated to go up a block to the east of the historic Chaves County Courthouse in the 400 block of Main Street.
The latest funding has been approved as a capital outlay by lawmakers during this winter’s legislative session, and will partially pay for the planning, design, and construction of the project.
Additional work will see the building of bathrooms, an iron security gate, and buffer walls to block sounds from nearby railroad tracks.
In speaking at a public meeting in Roswell earlier this year, Bill Williams, Chaves County Manager, said the bathroom component of the project was of particular importance, noting that they will be available for residents attending public events even beyond the confines of the cultural plaza.
It is thought that altogether the project will cost around $2.3 million to complete.
An exact construction schedule for the park has not yet been announced.
Main Street Roswell is a part of the larger New Mexico Main Street program designed to spur downtown redevelopment and revitalization across the state.
